The Florida Peer Network will be conducting our first annual Leadership Institute, Charting the Course: The Peer Provider Partnership, September 25th and 26th, 2006. The Leadership Institute provides a unique leadership development learning opportunity for Network members through a series of general sessions, workshops, panel discussions and a keynote address by Clint Rayner, Chief of the Office of Consumer and Family Affairs for the State of Florida. This was made possible with the generous support and sponsorship by the Florida Council for Community Mental Health, the Advocacy Center for Persons with Disabilities, the SAMH Corporation and Eli Lily Pharmaceuticals. It will be held at the Lake Buena Vista Hilton Hotel in the Orlando area the day before the Council’s Annual Conference begins.
The Network is able to provide full scholarships thanks to the Advocacy Center. The scholarships allow us to support 45 Florida Peer Network members to participate in the Institute, and we have reserved 15 seats for providers, for a total of 60 Institute participants. The Network feels it is important to model the principles of inclusion, and felt our first Leadership Institute was a great forum for this. Small groups of 20 will break out for workshops, allowing for a much more interactive learning experience.
Our Leadership Institute is designed for our members who have never been to a state-level conference before, people who are at a point in their recovery where they want to give something back. Graduates of our first Leadership Institute are emerging leaders in Florida’s consumer movement, and will continue their leadership development via our Mentoring Project in the year follow the Institute. Research has shown a relationship between leadership opportunities and recovery. Look for further information about the Leadership Institute, including the full program description, here on our website, in the very near future.
