The title of this book refers to an insane mental health system, not crazy people. The book tells two stories. The first is Pete Earley's son, who was arrested while experiencing a manic episode. The second describes what Earley learned during a yearlong investigation inside the Miami-Dade County jail. There, and in Dade and Broward Counties, he shadowed inmates and patients and interviewed various officials, providers, and parents.
This is a readable and compassionate book, but it fails to tell the whole story. Left out of the reporting are recovering consumer/survivors who have learned to help themselves and others through peer support and advocacy. This is an ideal opportunity for members of the Florida Peer Network to join in a public dialogue on criminalization of persons with mental illness and the need to transform the mental health system
The book may be purchased at any bookstore, and also ordered through Amazon.com at a discounted price.
