The ORYGEN Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, Australia, recently sent an invitation for members of the Florida Peer Network, Inc., to participate in their project Self-help for depressive symptoms: Finding messages suitable for promotion to the public.
The aim of the project is to get consensus between two panels of experts (consumers/service users and clinicians/researchers) on the best self-help methods for reducing sub-threshold depressive symptoms. April 13th is the deadline for enrolling!!
Any consumers within FPN who may be interested in participating can distribute information about the project, found at www.mhfa.com.au/surveymonkey/Self-help_info_sheet_consumers.html. They are recruiting individuals who have experienced unipolar depression, are currently well, and have taken a publicly visible role (e.g. written a book/website on depression, given a public talk, convened a peer support group, is employed as a consumer advocate or joined a mental health consumer organisation in an official role). Participants are not required to attend any meetings as all contact will be via the internet.
If anyone is interested in participating or has any questions, please contact Amy Morgan by email, ajmorgan@unimelb.edu.au, or phone: +61-3-9342 3764 (please note that this is an overseas long-distance number).
We would really appreciate your help with what we believe to be an important and worthwhile project. Once self-help methods with high ratings of effectiveness and feasibility are identified, they can be promoted to the public to reduce the level of depressive symptoms in the community and to stop some sub-threshold cases becoming clinical cases.
We encourage you to consider attending the first International Conference on Self-Determination that will be held in Detroit, Michigan, May 27-29, 2008. Scholarships are available for consumer/survivors. Please pass this information to people or other organizations that you think may be interested.
Scholarship applications (PDF, 66k) are due Feb. 15, 2008. (The form below can be used to apply to up to two conferences.)
This conference is designed to go beyond just talking about what a good idea self-determination is for people. It’s designed to create opportunities for in-depth discussions about how people – across disability groups and national boundaries-can learn from each other and work together to identify better strategies to make progress toward self-determination for all.
The conference is designed to facilitate new partnerships and alliances to get beyond rhetoric and platitudes to a new day when people, regardless of their disability or need for support, will have control over their future and the resources they need to pursue a meaningful life.
Tuesday, May 27, has two pre-conference all-day sessions: 1) Income and Asset Development, and 2) International Communication and Information Sharing Strategies to Support Self-Determination. The Opening Ceremony will be on Tuesday night, followed by workshops and plenary sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. The National Public Radio StoryCorps Program will be there to tape stories. Information about the conference will be updated regularly at: www.self-determination.com.
